        1. The article "UDL and Intellectual Disability: What Do We Know and Where Do We Go?" by Kavita Rao, Sean J. Smith, and K. Alisa Lowrey (2017) examines the application of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in supporting students with intellectual disabilities (ID) in PreK-12 settings. This instructional framework promotes flexible learning approaches to accommodate all types of learners, including those with disabilities.  Classrooms typically separate these learners from their peers and place them in specialized classrooms, only allowing them to mingle with their peers in common spaces like lunches, recesses, etc.                2. The first UDL Guideline I am planning to implement into the lesson I am creating is Consideration 5.2 - Use multiple tools for construction, composition, and creativity . In education, it is imperative to foster creativity and allow for effective learning environments. This has been the primary focus for scholars like Mark Gura and Lisa Rivero. Gura is an advocate for the importance of cultivating a creative learning environment that not only encourages innovation, but promotes critical thinking and student engagement through technology and meaningful content. Rivero also emphasizes the importance of differentiated instruction, student autonomy, and culturally responsive teaching. This is to support diverse learners in tying material to their personal lives and cultures. The graphic below aligns with the principles discussed in Chapter 4 of How People Learn II: Learners, Contexts, and Cultures (2018), which explores the influence of culture, context, and prior knowledge on the learning process. By integrating insights from Gura, Rivero, and research on learning environments, educators can create dynamic and inclusive spaces that nurture creativity and ...

PART ONE: As described in Authentic Instruction and Assessment, " authentic intellectual work involves original application of knowledge and skills, rather than just routine use of facts and procedures." (Newmann et al., 2007) There are 3 different components in authentic intellectual work. These are construction of knowledge , disciplined inquiry , and value beyond school .  Construction of Knowledge is essentially thinking outside of the box to apply baseline knowledge to your unique situation and constructing existing knowledge to solve unique problems.  Disciplined Inquiry is broken down even further into three sub categories: prior knowledge base, in-depth understanding, and elaborated communication. Your construction of knowledge needs to be guided by your disciplined inquiry. You need to be able to have some pre-existing knowledge as well as the ability to develop an in depth understanding of what you are learning.  Value Beyond School is when you find value in ...

Part 1: Hello, everyone! My name is Taylor Doverspike. I am from St. Charles, MO, and currently live in Republic, MO. I am in my second year of teaching in Monett, MO. I teach one section of middle school drama and then I spend the rest of my day teaching high school drama, technical theatre, advanced drama, and speech/debate. Truthfully, my current professional goals are to survive and keep my head above water these next couple of years as I continue to get the hang of things. Having 5 different preps plus being in charge of the theatre department, directing all of the shows, running our Thespian Troupe, and going to speech/debate tournaments is a lot and you can drown very quickly if you are not careful. I love what I do, although I am trying to eventually completely get rid of speech/debate from my schedule. Another current goal of mine would be to continue to grow our theatre program. I inherited a rather small program that did not get as much support as ...
